At Limestone Coast Dental, we understand that dental anxiety can be overwhelming. Our sedation dentistry services are designed to help you feel relaxed and comfortable during your dental procedures.
Say goodbye to your fears and experience painless dentistry with us.
What is Sedation Dentistry?
Sedation dentistry is all about making your dental visits calm, stress-free, and comfortable. With the help of safe, carefully chosen medications, we can ease anxiety and create a relaxed experience—even for patients who feel nervous about dental care.
Whether you’re coming in for a simple cleaning or a more complex procedure, sedation can help you stay at ease so you can receive the treatment you need without fear or discomfort. Some patients prefer to be awake but deeply relaxed (moderate sedation), while others choose a level of sedation where they won’t remember much of the procedure. The type of sedation is always tailored to your individual needs.
At Limestone Coast Dental, your safety and comfort come first. Our experienced clinicians work closely with specialist anaesthetists and certified experienced nurses to provide IV sedation at the highest standard of care. From start to finish, every step is designed to give you peace of mind, knowing you’re in safe hands.
If you’ve been putting off treatment because of dental anxiety, sedation dentistry could be the solution that helps you take care of your smile—comfortably and confidently.
Sedation Dentistry Options
Everyone’s needs are different, which is why we offer a range of sedation choices. Depending on the type of procedure and your personal comfort level, there are three safe and effective ways to experience a relaxed dental visit.

Oral Sedation
A prescribed pill taken about an hour before your visit helps you feel calm and relaxed throughout treatment. You’ll be awake but drowsy, and since the effects can last for a few hours, you’ll need someone to drive you home.

Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)
This safe and effective option is breathed in through a small mask, helping you feel calm and comfortable during treatment. The effects wear off quickly, and most patients can drive themselves home afterward.

Intravenous (IV) Sedation
The deepest form of sedation we offer, IV medication is administered directly into your bloodstream by a specialist. You’ll stay responsive but deeply relaxed, with little to no memory of the procedure. Since recovery can take up to a full day, you’ll need someone to drive you home.

Sedation & Sleep Dentistry Process
STEP 1
Consultation & Preparation
You’ll meet with your dentist and a specialist anesthetist to review your treatment plan, medical history, current medications, and any allergies. This helps create the safest sedation plan tailored to you. You’ll also be given specific pre-procedure instructions.
STEP 2
During your dental sedation
A specialist anaesthetist administers the IV medication, ensuring you are safely and comfortably sedated. You’ll remain responsive but deeply relaxed, with little to no memory of the procedure. While the anaesthetist monitors your vital signs throughout, your dentist focuses on completing your dental treatment.
STEP 3
Recovery & Aftercare
After the procedure, you’ll rest in our recovery area with an experienced certified nurse until you are stable and alert. As you won’t be able to drive, arrange for someone to take you home. Plan to rest for the remainder of the day. Children may feel drowsy or unsettled afterwards, so a parent or caregiver should be present.
Aftercare Following IV Sedation
Once your procedure is complete, you’ll be cared for in our recovery area until you’re stable and alert. As drowsiness can last for several hours, a responsible adult must drive you home.
We recommend resting for the remainder of the day to allow a smooth and safe recovery.

IV sedation involves administering sedative medication directly into the bloodstream, inducing a deep state of relaxation while keeping patients conscious and responsive. The level of sedation is continuously adjusted to ensure comfort throughout the procedure.
Unlike general anesthesia, which renders patients completely unconscious, IV sedation allows them to remain awake but deeply relaxed. Patients can respond to verbal cues and maintain protective reflexes, unlike with general anesthesia.
IV sedation is generally safe when administered by a trained professional, with continuous monitoring of vital signs. It is ideal for patients with dental anxiety or those undergoing complex procedures. However, it may not be suitable for pregnant women or individuals with certain medical conditions.
Patients should fast for several hours beforehand and arrange for someone to drive them home. A small needle is used to insert a cannula into a vein, through which the sedative is administered. Patients quickly feel relaxed and drowsy but remain conscious.
Patients may feel groggy and have little memory of the procedure. Effects typically wear off within a few hours, though drowsiness can persist. It’s recommended to rest, avoid driving or operating machinery for 24 hours, and stay hydrated.
The sedative effects last for several hours, varying by individual and dosage. While IV sedation is primarily used for complex or lengthy procedures, it can be requested for less invasive treatments if a patient experiences severe dental anxiety.
IV sedation offers deeper relaxation than oral sedatives or nitrous oxide, helping patients with dental anxiety, strong gag reflexes, or those undergoing multiple treatments in one visit. It allows for a more comfortable and stress-free experience.
The dentist or anesthesiologist precisely adjusts sedation levels throughout the procedure. Dentists must undergo specialized training in sedation techniques, pharmacology, and emergency management to ensure patient safety.
In certain cases, IV sedation can be used for children with extreme dental anxiety or complex dental needs. It is typically administered by a pediatric dentist or anesthesiologist with expertise in sedation for younger patients.
Patients are continuously monitored for heart rate, oxygen levels, and blood pressure. Emergency equipment and medications are readily available in the rare case of an adverse reaction.
It’s important to disclose your medical history, current medications, and any allergies. Discussing past sedation experiences and your level of dental anxiety will help tailor the sedation to your needs.
While IV sedation is typically reserved for more complex procedures, it may be considered for routine treatments in cases of severe dental anxiety or special needs. Your dentist can help determine the best sedation option for you.
